Shaun completes the Jungle Marathon 2007

Shaun finished Stage 6 around midnight our time and placed 7th overall in the 2007 Jungle Marathon. What a fantastic result!

Shaun spoke with Red Symons again this morning. In Red’s introduction he spoke of Piranhas and commented that they would proabably leave Shaun alone as he would be all skin and bone.

Shaun talked about the fact that he could hardly walk from the blisters on his feet. I am sure that will not stop him having a beer at tonight’s “Jungle Party”.

I started and finished Stage 5 in 17 hours 45 minutes with Johnny J from Denmark, crossing the line together in equal 5th position. My overall ranking is now 7th and that’s unlikely to change between now and the official finish of the event.

The 250 metre swim at the beginning of the stage was the straw that broke the camel’s back for my feet. They are now completely trashed. Not only do I have numerous blisters to contend with but my feet are quite swollen and painful.I’m also very nauseous and contending with various bites all over my body.

I also know what it feels like to fall asleep on your feet!During the last 2 hours I deliberately chewed on my finger nails one by one to keep myself awake!

I am pretty sure that a further 4 or 5 competitors have had to pull out which is disappointing as the last stage and finishing line are ‘in sight.’ Emails, food, comfortable bed and uninterrupted sleep await me tomorrow night!

Stage 4 was reportedly 18-km but according to my GPS turned out to be 23-km! It included a 300+ metre river crossing and I also lost the track at one point so overall ran further than the 23 kms - I am consequently nursing a couple of extra blisters on my feet - the price you pay I guess! I decided to take Stage 4 relatively easy given that Stage 5 is 87 km + - I came in around 13th place today so I am guessing that my overall ranking is somewhere around 9th or 10th. I still feel that I am on track to achieve a top 10 position. Keep those emails coming - they provide great motivation and are the one thing (apart from food!) that I look forward to at the end of each stage.
